WCG Inc. announced that it has decided to hold regional qualifying rounds from the first edition and expand the scope of participation. It said that it would fix the schedule of the games in the near future.

In December last year, WCG Inc. told at the press conference that it would reopen the competition first as invitation-only matches and then hold regional qualifications from the second edition. But requests for immediate introduction of regional rounds poured in from industry officials and esports fans with high expectations on the resumption of the games. Especially, there were requests to open the competition for non-professional gamers too.

WCG, seeking to be the ‘global esports festival for a better world’ humbly accepted the opinions and requests of esports fans and gamers and decided to return to the basics. As a result, WCG decided to adopt regional qualifications earlier to give chance to more gamers around the world to participate and enjoy the competition.

WCG, aiming to be ‘WCG for everyone’, plans to launch the regional qualifications to be not just a competition, but a joyful and challenging journey by re-planning competition operation system, contents, and other events.

As a consequence, the first competition will be rescheduled to prepare for worldwide regional qualifying matches. WCG Inc. is expected to announce the new competition schedule soon.

WCG started as a demonstration competition entitled “WCG Challenge” in 2000 and was held for 14 years until 2013 when it took place in Kunshan, China. The games have not been held since then, though they were acclaimed as one of the world’s largest esports tournament. Last year, Smilegate Holdings took over WCG Inc., stoking esports fans’ expectations to enjoy the games again.
